How Long Should Your Car Tyres Last? A UK Guide

Tyre lifespan varies enormously depending on driving style, maintenance, and conditions. Find out what's normal and when it's time to replace.

How Long Should Your Car Tyres Last? A UK Guide

One of the most common questions drivers ask is: how long should my tyres last? The answer isn't entirely straightforward, because tyre lifespan depends on a combination of factors including driving style, vehicle type, road conditions, maintenance habits, and the quality of the tyre itself. Understanding these factors helps you plan replacements and avoid driving on dangerous rubber.

Average Tyre Lifespan by Mileage

As a general guide, a quality tyre driven at average UK annual mileage (around 8,000 to 10,000 miles per year) can last between 25,000 and 50,000 miles depending on the brand and tyre type. Performance tyres on sporty vehicles tend to wear faster due to softer rubber compounds. Tyres on the driven axle typically wear faster than those on the non-driven axle. Front tyres on front-wheel-drive cars, which handle both driving and steering forces, commonly wear 30–50% faster than the rears.

Age Matters as Much as Mileage

Even if a tyre appears to have adequate tread remaining, age is an important consideration. Rubber compounds degrade over time due to heat, UV exposure, and oxidation — a process called ageing. Most major tyre manufacturers recommend replacing any tyre that is more than six years old, and consider ten years to be the absolute maximum regardless of apparent condition. You can check a tyre's age by reading the DOT code on the sidewall: the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture, for example 1823 means week 18 of 2023.

Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing Now

Don't wait until your tyres reach the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. Replace them when tread depth reaches 3mm for safety reasons. Also look out for cracking or crazing in the sidewall rubber, bubbles or bulges anywhere on the tyre (which indicate internal structural damage), pulling to one side while driving, and any vibration or unusual noise that wasn't there before. These are all signs of a tyre that needs attention.

If you're unsure about the condition or age of your tyres in Nottingham or North London, call Enzo Mobile Tyres for a no-obligation inspection at your location. We'll give you an honest assessment and fit replacements on the spot if needed.
