One of the most common questions our customers ask is whether they need to replace just one tyre or all four. The answer isn't always the same — it depends on the type of damage, the condition of your remaining tyres, and your vehicle's drivetrain. Making the wrong call can create handling imbalances and, in some cases, damage your vehicle's differential.
When a Single Tyre Replacement Is Fine
If your other three tyres have significant tread remaining — ideally all of a similar depth — replacing just the damaged or worn tyre is perfectly reasonable. Match the replacement as closely as possible to the brand and tread pattern of your remaining tyres where possible, and ensure the specification (size, load index, speed rating) is identical. For vehicles with independent suspension and no electronic torque-vectoring systems, a single replacement presents no mechanical issues provided the tread depth difference isn't extreme.
When You Should Replace in Pairs or All Four
If the damaged tyre is on the same axle as another tyre that's significantly more worn, it's strongly advisable to replace both tyres on that axle at the same time. Mismatched tread depths on the same axle create uneven braking and handling characteristics, particularly on wet roads. For all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, fitting a single tyre with significantly different tread depth from the other three can overwork the centre differential and transfer case, causing expensive mechanical damage. Many manufacturers of AWD vehicles specify replacing all four tyres at once if the difference exceeds a few millimetres.
Run Flat Tyres: Specific Considerations
Run flat tyres should generally be replaced as a pair on the same axle where possible. Mixing run flat and conventional tyres on the same vehicle is strongly discouraged — the different handling characteristics under failure conditions can create unpredictable behaviour. Check your vehicle manufacturer's guidance before mixing tyre types.
When you call Enzo Mobile Tyres, we'll always assess the condition of all four tyres as part of the appointment and give you honest advice about whether a single replacement, a pair, or a full set is the right approach for your situation. We serve customers across Nottingham and North London with transparent pricing for any combination.
