Passing your driving test is an exciting milestone, but it's also the start of a lifetime of vehicle ownership responsibility. Your tyres are the only part of your car that physically contacts the road, making them one of the most critical safety components on your vehicle. Yet tyre maintenance is often neglected, particularly by newer drivers who may not have been taught to check them regularly.
Build a Simple Monthly Check Habit
Get into the habit of checking your tyres at least once a month. This takes about five minutes and covers three things: tyre pressure (using a gauge — visual inspection is not reliable), tread depth (using a 20p coin or a dedicated tread depth gauge), and a quick visual inspection of each tyre for bulges, cuts, cracks, or objects embedded in the rubber. Set a reminder on your phone if it helps — treat it the same way you'd treat checking your fuel level.
Don't Ignore Warning Lights
All cars manufactured after 2014 are fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). If the warning light on your dashboard — a horseshoe shape with an exclamation mark — illuminates, check your tyre pressures as soon as it's safe to do so. Do not ignore this warning or assume it will sort itself out. Driving on significantly under-inflated tyres increases the risk of a blowout and reduces your ability to steer and brake effectively.
Know When to Call for Help
If you experience a blowout while driving, do not panic or brake sharply. Hold the steering wheel firmly, ease off the accelerator, and allow the car to slow gradually before steering carefully to a safe stopping point. Switch on your hazard lights and call a roadside assistance provider or a mobile tyre fitter. Never attempt to change a tyre on a busy road or motorway — move to a safe distance from the vehicle and wait for professional help.
