What Causes Tyre Blowouts and How to Prevent Them

Tyre blowouts are frightening and dangerous. Understanding the most common causes can help you avoid one entirely.

What Causes Tyre Blowouts and How to Prevent Them

A tyre blowout — the sudden and dramatic failure of a tyre while driving — is one of the most dangerous events a driver can experience. At motorway speeds, a blowout can cause rapid loss of vehicle control. The good news is that the majority of blowouts are preventable with regular checks and a little awareness of the risk factors.

Under-Inflation: The Leading Cause

Running on under-inflated tyres is the single most common cause of blowouts. When a tyre is below its recommended pressure, the sidewalls flex excessively with every rotation. This generates heat, and it's that heat build-up which ultimately causes the tyre's structure to fail. A tyre can appear visually normal even when it's significantly under-inflated, which is why monthly pressure checks and TPMS monitoring are essential rather than relying on a visual inspection alone.

Overloading Your Vehicle

Every tyre has a maximum load rating indicated on its sidewall. Exceeding this rating — by overloading a car, van, or SUV beyond its stated capacity — places the tyre under stress it wasn't designed to handle. Combined with heat from motorway driving, an overloaded tyre is at serious risk of blowout. Always check your vehicle's maximum payload and ensure your tyres carry the correct load index for how you use your vehicle.

Road Hazards and Tyre Age

Striking a deep pothole, kerb, or road debris at speed can cause immediate structural damage to a tyre's sidewall or internal structure, sometimes without producing an obvious external sign. This damage can lead to a blowout days or weeks later. Inspect your tyres after any significant impact. Tyre age is also a factor — rubber degrades over time even without visible wear, and most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres over six years old regardless of tread depth.

If you're concerned about the condition of your tyres in Nottingham or North London, Enzo Mobile Tyres offers free tyre health checks at your location. We'll inspect tread depth, pressure, sidewall condition, and overall safety — and if a replacement is needed, we'll fit it on the spot.
